Emancipation of slavery Essay

The writer reflects the emancipation of slavery and how it influenced the American women. For many Americans (the slave owners), it was not possible to think that what will happen if they no longer owe slaves. It was natural for people who were used to the cheap and easy labour found themselves in the middle of nowhere. The demise of slavery gave rise to a new kind of slavery where woman could sell their body. For writer this idea of selling women seems new, but in many tribal societies around the world, women are still sold and bought. The idea of selling body was loathsome in society that was still Victorian in thinking. The moralist advocated ban on streetwalkers and prostitution; while state sought to legalize the body trade, it was this tussle that continued for decades. For many the idea of selling body was a reminiscent of slavery; but even the law itself was dubious about the prostitution. According to the idealist the prostitution stood as a† social system in which all was for sale†. It was this thinking that made prostitution or women at the edge a social issue. For Southerners slavery and marriage was one and the same thing; while for Northerner slavery and prostitution were one and the same thing. The Southerners were used to slavery and bondage, prostitution for them seemed a kind of outlet where they could vent out their frustration along with economic benefits. For Northerners marriage was a sacred idea hijacked by streetwalkers to lure loyal husbands and sons. The Southerners argued that by recruiting black women as slave prostitutes they are limiting the white prostitution again shows double standard. The Northerners argued that prostitution continued because the lusty men of South wanted it. For abolitionists it was unthinkable to mix market economy and family values together in one place. Ironically both of them used prostitution as deformation, but the reality was far different. The author failed to address the core issue of the North and South. The basic reason of differences between the North and South has been economics. In broader sense the North was rapidly modernizing and South felt threatened by it. Being more viable economically means more powerful, the South was still stuck up to agrarian economy. It was under these circumstances in the South slaves were more important compared to North. Being less modern and less developed the slave prostitutes were a source of income for Jones in the South and they could not give it away easily. For North it became ideological because they were already reaping the benefits of industrlized economy. Even in the modern world, prostitution is done by the poorest of the poor in the society. In present day American society, despite all freedom no one considers prostitution a respectable and honourable way of life. In simple words, the women who practice this profession are doing it out of economic necessity. In modern day America, government is willing to accept the porn industry legally regardless of how women are exploited for sake of huge tax that reaches US$50 billion per year. A Study on the Need of Women Education for Socio-Economic Development of Rural Assam

ABSTRACT TITLE: A Study on the Need of Women Education for Socio-Economic Development of Rural Assam Birinchi Choudhury** Without the development the rural areas of Assam, we can never materialize our goal for being developed state by 2010 as declared by the present state govt. For the development of the rural Assam, including male, women education is a must. But women are neglected year after year. The attitude towards women hasnt changed yet. The literary rate shows this fact. According to the census, 2001, the literary rate in Assam is 64. 28 percent where 71. 93 percent for males and 56. 03 percent for female. In 2000, the infant mortality rate is 66 per thousand for males and 83 per thousand for females. What does it mean? Presently, nearly 2. 13 lakhs children of age group 6-14 years have not seen the varanda of primary school. In 2003, 2. 39 lakhs of children have left the primary schools without completing the course. Of course it reduced to 44,222 in 2005(September). It is seen that all the children are living below the poverty line and their parents are illiterate. Therefore, including male, women should be educated for complete eradication of illiteracy and for being developed socially, economically, culturally and politically. Lecturers of B. B. K. The education of the children, the standard of living of the family is mostly dependent on whether the woman of the family is educated or not. 4. Besides, her involvement in the society, e. g. socially, culturally, economically is also dependent on her education. Our study also shows that the family in which the woman is uneducated has higher number of children and her familys standard of living is also low. Even an uneducated wife doesnt know whether there is any need of education for her girls child. Therefore, mass women education is a must. Limitations of the study: – The study has the following limitations- (i) The study is conducted on samples taken from a few villages that cannot be judged as perfect representation of entire population spread all over the state. (ii) Primary data collected through questionnaire has its own limitations as it lacks proper o-operation and support from the viewers. (iii) Response error cannot be over ruled. (iv) Time factor is also another limitation. Methodology:- We have employed a random sampling method for the selection of the sample where a sample of 100 wives and 100 husbands of a few villages have been interviewed separately through two different questionnaires . Besides discussion and interactions with different people of our locality help us a lot in preparing this paper. Their views and ideas have been clearly reflected in our findings and suggestions. Analysis and findings: – (A). Analysis of the wives view point 1. Only 15%of the population are educated and 85%are uneducated. The educated populations have the tendency to provide education for both boys and girls equally. They have less number of child and they, with males, pr efer womens participation in the decision making process in the family as well as in the society. Of course, some uneducated people unable to understand the need of womens education for socio-economic development. Most of the uneducated women do not want to provide education for their girls child. There fore, we should change the mindset of the parents as well as the society. No doubt mass women education will be helpful in this respect. Suggestions: – The following suggestions can be put forwarded as per the primary study. 1. We have to change the mindset of the parents as well the society for reducing gender classification. We should change the mindset of the society so that the society recognizes the complementary role of the women. 2. Provision of quotas in the govt. jobs as well as private job may encourage the parents o provide education for their girls Childs. 3. Female students should be given scholar-ship in the college level. Tuition fees for women should be completely abolished. If it is not possible, it should be at least ? th. 14 4. Reservation in politics may be helpful for women empowerment. Women empowerment encourages women to provide opportunities to do for the welfare of the women. 5. We should create the consciousness of the parents; especially the women, we should create consciousness about the need of women education. For this, social awareness camp regarding women education in the village level should be organized. The govt. should take a mission for women education. For this, some local educated women who have grip in the society should be appointed for this mission. 6. The company’s global Beauty and Personal care market share is 11.7% with the volume growth in net sales in this segment being an average of 4% in 2011 where the beauty segment growth was 3%, the grooming segment at 4% and the Health segment at 5% (P &G Annual Report, 2011: 41-42; Euromonitor, 2010: 4-5). The market share growth for the Beauty and personal care products experienced single digit growth at the rate of 2.8% with the market share growth for the Beauty and Personal Care share for the company based on the main categories of skin care, hair care, men’s grooming, fragrances, and oral care being as shown below in figure 1. However, with the company’s strategy response in focusing on core businesses and brands, and divesting in its less critical segments, the company has been able to record growth within its various product segments, with the beauty and personal care products taking the lead in growth. In addition, the company has over the past three years focused in building a strong market position in emerging countries such as China, India, Russia, and Brazil (Raval, 2012 : 1; Prior, 2011:201; Reingold, 2011:60). Financial Assessment: The company has bounced back from the 2009 decline in net sales through its post recession strategy of focusing on its core businesses and brands, and its continued investments in the emerging markets. The most impactful strategy though that has increased net sales is the company’s decision to cut down prices. These strategies have proved successful with the company increasing its net sales over the 2010 and 2011 period. Net sales rose by 4.6% in 2011 from 2010 net sales. This strategy though effective in the short term, it may be detrimental to brand equity in the long term. This is clearly noted with the downward trend of the net earnings value since 2009 at the rate of 1% (P &G Annual Report, 2011: 1-2). The revenue versus profit growth trends over the past five year period is as shown in figure 2. The beauty and personal care segments as noted above though have been growing in sales volume especially in the e merging countries (P&G Annual Report, 2011:52; P&G, 2010:5). Civil Rights Campaign During the Years 1945-57 Essay There were many factors which contributed to the eventual success of the Civil Rights Movement during the years 1945- 57, a key example being the campaigns and peaceful protests of the NAACP which worked through the Supreme Court in the U. S. to tackle â€Å"de jure† discrimination. The group’s membership grew from 50,000 to 450,000 by 1945 and was the largest civil rights organisation at the time. Overall, the group had significant success in the years 1945- 57. However, the work of the NAACP alone was not solely responsible for the success of the Civil Rights campaign and other factors which contributed to this include, the influence of key figures such as Martin Luther King and the actions of the Federal Government, including both Congress, the Supreme Court and Presidents, the work of other known civil rights groups and the second World War, which alongside the NAACP, influenced black Americans awareness. It cannot be denied that the actions of the Civil Rights campaigning group, the NAACP, played a significant role in addressing â€Å"de jure† discrimination in particular before Martin Luther King was on the scene. The group supported Black Americans through the Supreme Court rulings in attempts to put an end to â€Å"de jure† discrimination. A significant example of how the NAACP was successful is the case of Brown V. Board of Education 2 in 1955; although successful during the first Brown case in 1954, the judgement of desegregating public schools was not enforced leading to the Brown case 2 which did successfully enforce the ruling. The judgement overruled the Plessy V Ferguson case of 1896 which allowed Jim Crow Laws. Plessy V. Ferguson was essentially the beginning of the ‘separate but equal’ ideology. Although a success in terms of â€Å"de jure† discrimination, it is important to remember that the NAACP did not deal with â€Å"de facto† discrimination, something which did hold the desegregation of public schools back in the first Brown case. Another key example of how the NAACP was successful is the case of Morgan V. Virginia in 1946 in which the group tried to put an end to segregation on public transport. As a whole, the NAACP did play a significant role in the progress towards improving the status of black Americans as it not only presented black Americans as united but also built up a positive representation of the minorities through their peaceful protests and campaigns. However, if there was to be any criticism of the NAACP, it would be their neglect of addressing â€Å"de facto† discrimination. Although the de jure victories were a success, they could not fully be successful as on some occasions, they could not be fully enforced due to the hostility of Southern White Americans in particular. A key example of this is the radical group the Ku Klux Klan who opposed African Americans violently and attempted to prevent Black Americans from making de fact and de jure change by intimidating them and subjecting them to extreme racial discrimination. It is also important to remember that although the NAACP was successful with the majority of their campaigns, it was ultimately down to the rulings of the Supreme Court to ensure that the judgements were passed. In terms of the Federal government, the extent of their influence during the years 1945- 55 is questionable as Congress in particular opposed most essentially positive developments put forward. For example, when Truman put forward his document, ‘To Secure These Rights’ which included an anti- lynching policy and voting rights for black Americans, congress denounced the document. However, Truman did have some positive contributions towards the Civil Rights Movement, for example, he did desegregate the armed forces something which Congress had no influence over. Although a positive development, it can be argued that Truman was not persistent enough to pursue trying to bring about racial equality. Unlike Truman, who appeared to favour the Civil Rights campaign, Eisenhower seemed less supportive of the movement. Nonetheless, he did enforce integration of a public school in1957 during the Little Rock campaign and towards the end of his Presidency he did enforce the Civil Rights Act of 1957 which focused on the voting rights of African Americans. Looking at the influence the Second World War had on black Americans, it cannot be denied that it did affect the Civil Rights campaign significantly. During the war, the U. S. needed the support the black community. As a result, the Fair Employment Practices Commission was set up to ensure that black Americans received fair treatment in government hiring. However, although on the service this seems like a success for the progress of the Civil Rights campaign, its success was limited as only a small number of black Americans were actually employed in the government. However, the war did increase prosperity amongst the Black community as many did have some form of employment. The involvement of black Americans fighting in the war also meant that many travelled abroad and became increasingly aware of the discrimination they were exposed to back in the U. S. The fact that the Second World War was about freedom and the U. S. were fighting to stop the persecution of minorities, in particular Jews, almost made the U. S. look like hypocrites as they themselves were actively discriminating against ethnic minorities. Overall, the impact of the Second World War is undeniable as it was also responsible for many black Americans migrating from the South to the North in order to find employment after 1945. This migration led to large tensions in Northern Ghetto’s and widespread riots which did bring about negative opinions of the black community and the civil rights campaign. It cannot be denied however, that the increase in Black consciousness did help the NAACP as it increased membership and support for the civil rights campaign. Probably the most well known and essentially influential figure involved in the Civil Rights campaign is Martin Luther King. Although he did not become largely involved in the campaign until 1955 during the Montgomery Bus boycott which did lead to the NAACP’s court case, Browder V.  Gayle, ruling segregation on buses illegal, King was successful in providing the Black communities with a political voice and building up widespread awareness through the media, something which helped to gain the civil rights movement more sympathy from White Americans, particularly in the North. King also founded the SCLC in 1957 which also helped contributed to the movement. However, during the early years of the campaign the NAACP can be seen as the most successful organisation in campaigning towards improving the status of Black Americans in the U. S. In conclusion, I believe that the NAACP was largely responsible for the success of the Civil Rights campaign in the years 1945- 57. However, I also believe that the group would not have been as successful in fighting de jure discrimination in the U. S. if it wasn’t for the actions of the Federal Government, in particularly the Supreme Court and the Presidents as these were essentially the ones responsible for the enforcing change. I also believe that the Second World War is also responsible, to some extent, in increasing awareness amongst the Black community which essentially led to increased popularity for the NAACP and its success.

Orbids of the Skull Sarah Ferreira 1.INTRODUCTION The orbits of a human skull is the space in which the eye and it’s appendages are located. The two orbits in the human skull are conical â€Å"holes† that opens into the midline of the face and point back into the head. Each orbit includes an apex, four walls and a base. The functions of these orbits is firstly to keep the eye â€Å"safe† from any mechanical injury and secondly to supply an entrance for the optic nerve(that transports visual information from the eye’s retina to the vision centers in the brain through electrical impulses) to the brain. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the orbits of the human skull is very important to any doctor in order to comprehend any disorders that patients might experience that are related to the eye socket itself, as well as to understand the surgical management of this region in the human skull. 2.The orbit of the skull 2.1The general location of the orbits in the human skull: The orbit in the human skull lies anterior to the temporal fossa (laterally) and anterior to the middle cranial fossa (medially). It’s also situated superior to the maxillary air sinus, lateral to the nasal space as well as below the anterior cranial fossa. 2.2The shape of the orbit of the skull: The shape of the orbit in the human skull looks like a pyramid that has four distinctive sides (â€Å"walls†), but as one moves posterior, it becomes three sided( toward the apex). The most posterior portion of the pyramid shaped orbit is the apex (of the orbit) and it’s positioned at the craniofacial junction. ( The apex is also where the optic canal (that contains the central retina vein, ophthalmic artery, symphathetic nerve and optic nerve) opens into the posterior part of the orbit and it forms the tip of this pyramid shaped â€Å"cavity† or structure.) 2.3The bones of the orbit of the skull and their bone classification: There are seven bones that make up the orbit namely the: 1)The Maxillary bone(that is also classified an irregular bone) 2)The orbital plate of the Frontal bone(that is also classified as an irregular bone) 3)The Zygomatic bone(that is also classified as a flat bone) 4)The Ethmoidal bone(that is also classified as an irregular bone) 5)The Lacrimal bone(that is also classified as a flat bone) 6) The Palative bone (that is also classified as an irregular bone) 7) The Sphenoid bone (that is also classified as an irregular bone) All of the above mentioned bones also form part of the human skull. The orbit also contains fissures and fossae where various blood vessels and nerves pass through. 2.4The walls of the orbit The orbit as mentioned earlier consist of four sides or â€Å"walls†. The facial and cranial bones that forms the structure of the orbits also forms these four walls. The walls of the orbit of the skull are as follows: 1)The superior wall/ â€Å"roof† 2)The lateral wall 3)The inferior wall/ â€Å"floor† 4)The medial wall. 3Introduction to the bones of the orbit and the orbital walls that they form: The superior margin and most of the roof of the orbit are formed by the frontal bones of the orbital plate. The inferomedial margin and the floor of the orbit is also formed by the maxilla bone. The anterior part of the lateral wall and the inferolateral margin of the orbit is also formed by the zygomatic bone. Much of the medial wall of the orbit is also formed by the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. There are also a number of ways in which the sphenoid bone contributes to the structure of the orbit: Firstly, the lateral wall posterior to the Zygomatic bone is constituted by the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and secondly the posterior margin of the roof (or superior wall) is formed by the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.Thirdly the optic canal (that provide a passage for the optic canal and the optic nerve into the orbital space) which is in the apex of the orbit, is also framed by the roots of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.( This†roots† of the lesser wing a lso connects it to the body of the sphenoid bone.) The medial wall of the orbit( that is between the frontal process of the maxilla and the lateral mass of the ethmoid is completed by the small, curved , lacrimal bone. The posterior angle of the floor or inferior wall is completed by the orbital process of the palatine bone that is insinuated behind the maxilla and underneath the ethmoid bone. 3.1The superior wall or â€Å"roof† The lesser wing of the sphenoid bone constitutes/forms the posterior margin of the superior wall and also surrounds the optic canal( that â€Å"ac† as a channel for the optic nerve and ophthalmic artery). Thus the optic canal is situated posteriorly in the wing of the sphenoid bone that is smaller i.e. the lesser wing and this canal also communicates with the middle cranial fossa. (A fossa is a hollow or a shallow depression.) The superior margin of the bony cavity that contains the human eyeball are formed by the orbital plate of the frontal bone and this bone forms almost everything of the superior wall of the orbit except the posterior extremity of the superior wall. This specific part (the posterior extremity) is formed by the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. The superior orbital fissure is also situated posteriorly between the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone. (This fissure also communicates with the middle cranial fossa and also provides a passage for the frontal nerve, lacrimal nerve, oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, abducent nerve, nasociliary nerve and lastly the superior ophthalmic vein). A fossa for the lacrimal gland is made by the roof that rises laterally above the level of the rim of the orbit. The superior orbitals margin’s contour is laterally sharp and medially round. The supraorbital notch also leads from the orbit onto the face at the point of transition. On the frontal bones maxillary process, a small trochlear fossa that is in the anterior medial angle of the orbit gives an attachment to the trochlea. 3.2The Medial wall The medial wall consists of 4 bones namely: the sphenoid bone, ethmoid bone, lacrimal bone and maxillary bone. Thus the frontal process of the maxilla largely constitutes the medial margin of the orbit. The shorter maxillary process of the frontal bone are also met by the rising of the frontal process of the maxilla. The maxilla itself contributes little more than the rim to the medial orbital wall. The lacrimal bone, that has an irregular shape, articulates vertically with the frontal process of the maxilla within the orbit. The lacrimal sac’s fossa are framed or formed by both of these bones. The bony nasolacrimal canal is also continuous with the fossa which also proceed into the inferior nasal meatus below( that is the gap(space) covered by the inferior nasal concha. Posteriorly the fossa is bounded by a vertical ridge (that is named the lacrimal crest) and from this the orbital surface of the lacrimal bone increases posteriorly to meet the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. The upper part of the nasal cavity are separated from the orbit by the lateral mass of the ethmoid bone. The lateral mass of the ethmoid is pneumatized extensively by the ethmoid air cells and in many skulls this gives the medial wall the appearance or likeness of an unviolated honeycomb. The thinnest part of the wall is the lamina papyracea which means a â€Å"layer as thin as paper† The frontoethmoidal suture is where the medial wall and the roof of the orbit mets. Across this boundary, the ethmoid air cells of the lateral mass extend upward into the overlying frontal bone.The anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina open out of the orbit along the suture line into canals that pass horizontally between adjacent air cells. The first leads onto the upper surface of the cribriform plate, the second into the posterior ethmoidal and sphenoid air sinuses. 3.3The Lateral wall The Zygomatic bone forms the lateral margin and wall of the orbit and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, completes this lateral wall The greater wing of the sphenoid also does not articulate with the lesser wing of the sphenoid or the maxilla bone and because of this there is two gaps posteriorly. The first â€Å"gap† is the superior orbital fissure that is located between the lateral wall and the superior wall and the second†gap† is the inferior orbital fissure that located between the floor( also called the inferior wall ) and the lateral wall. These 2 fissures converge in the apex of the orbit of the skull that is just lateral to he optic canal. The inferior orbital fissure is roughly in line with the zygomatico-orbital foramen that opens in the orbital surface of the zygomatic bone.h This Zygomatic orbital foramen can be doubled or multiple or it may be so hidden as to be virtually missed by the human eye. 3.4The floor or inferior wall The maxilla(medially) and the Zygomatic bone(laterally) forms the inferior margin of the orbit that is also named the floor. The floor is also the shortest of all the orbit’s walls) The whole of the orbit floor is also virtually formed by the maxilla bone and the Zygomatic bone. The maxilla bone constitutes almost all of the surface of the floor except the extreme lateral angle.The roof of the maxillary air sinus is also formed by the bone of the floor that is very thin. The floor is completed in front of the apex by the small orbital process of the palatine bone.The inferior orbital fissure is left by the prominent infraorbital groove and this prominent infraorbital groove runs directly forward on the surface of the maxilla.This groove (halfway across the floor of the orbit) becomes continuous with the infraorbital canal( thus the infraorbital groove (and canal) is located in the inferior wall of the orbit and in the maxilla’s orbital plate and it â€Å"transfer† the blood vessels and the infraorbital nerve) , which eventually ends in the infraorbital foramen ( on the anterior surface of the maxilla below the orbital margin. 4The neurovascular portals in the orbit’s walls and in the apex( some of them ( the nerves and arteries that go through passages in the orbit and apex) are discussed below.): 4.1The apex From the middle cranial fossa the optic canal opens directly into the apex of the orbit. The ophthalmic branch of the internal carotid artery as well as the optic nerve(that’s covered by all meningeal layers) goes through the optic canal. Between the orbit and the middle cranial fossa the main passageway is the superior orbital fissure. 4.2The Medial wall The anterior and posterior ethmoidal branches of the nasociliary nerve are transmitted by the anterior and posterior ethmoidel foramina. Corresponding branches of the ophthalmic artery and veins draining to the superior ophthalmic vein also accompanies them. 4.3The Roof The supraorbital nerve and vessels are transmitted by the supraorbital notch( or foramen) onto the forehead. The supraorbital nerve is the larger extension of the frontal nerve and the artery is from the ophthalmic artery. 4.4Floor The infraorbital and zygomatic nerves and vessels are â€Å"transferred† by the inferior orbital fissure. The infraorbital nerve and vessels are carried from the inferior orbital fissure to the infra orbital foramen(through this foramen they appear onto the face) , by the infraorbital canal and the infraorbital groove. 4.5Lateral wall The zygomatic orbital foramen transmits the zygomatic vessels and the zygomatic nerves into the zygomaric bone( this happens beyond the lateral end of the inferior orbital fissure) The Zygomatoc facial foramen is the passageway through which the zygomatico facial nerve and vessel appear on to the head. It may happen that there are two foramens rather than one and this is not unusual. The zygomaticotemporal foramen is also the passageway through which the zygomaticotemporal nerve and vessels emerge into the temporal fossa. Picture of the orbits 5Possible clinical application in Radiography In Radiography(orbital Radiogrpahy) injury to they eye or trauma to the eye are detected by orbital x rays. ( Orbital x-rays are x-ray images of the left and right eye sockets in the human skull. It also includes the frontal sinuses and maxillary sinuses). Orbital x-rays are also used to detect changes in the structure of the eye, which may lead to various diseases, as well as to detect foreign bodies in the eye that a opthalmoscope( that’s an instrument that detect foreign bodies in the eye) cannot â€Å"spot† In the Radiography department there is going to be patients who have fractures and diseases of the orbitals. Some of the fractures encountered could be a fracture of the zygomatic arch, displacement of the zygomatico-frontal suture, infraorbital fractures, etc. It will be expected of every qualified Radiographer to take orbital x-ray images of these patients orbitals. To be able to do this a Radiographer must be familiar with complex anatomy of the orbits in the skull and it associated soft tissue . For example if a patients that’s been in a car accident has fractured his orbitals and this resulted in a fracture of the zygomatic arch, then it would be expected of a radiographer to know where this zygomatic arch is located in order to take an orbital x-ray image of that area. A Radiographer must also have sufficient knowledge to be able take an orbital x ray image in the correct angle or to discern when to take several x-rays (from different angles) in order to show the fractur e to the zygomatic arch more clearly. It may happen in serious emergency cases that the Radiographer must firstly look for any damage on the patients face(before he/she can take an x-ray) , and if this radiographer doesn’t know where the facial bones or orbital bones is located then it wouldn’t help taking an image of the wrong facial bone, because that would be of no usage to the doctors seeing the orbital x-rays, because they want to see the fracture in order to make a diagnosis. A doctor may also ask a radiographer if she can see anything abnormal on the x-ray and then again this radiographer must be able to identify the bones and the location of the fractures. Thus it is very important for a radiographer to know where the orbitals lie and of what bones it consists. 6CONCLUSION From the above mentioned research I conclude that it is very necessary for a radiographer to know the orbits of the eye in order to take valuable x-ray orbital images of this area. The orbitals of the human skull is also of utmost importance , because of the fact that it contains the eye, ( a vital organ that is used in almost every activity of a human being ex. from reading the newspaper to crossing the street) and thus patients that has any damage to this area need to be helped swiftly before a minor orbital injury could proceed to a life threatening injury and results in the patient losing his eye. A Radiographer also pays an important role in â€Å"helping† these patients and must know the anatomy of the orbits in order to supply the doctors with the needed medical information that would help doctors to make a diagnosis. Analysis :: Essays Papers

Analysis In the beginning of this year, I had lots of difficulties with this class because I did not think that writing papers in college would be so different from writing papers in high school. It was not easy at all because I did not understand many of the procedures of writing papers. I come from Puerto Rico and one of my weaknesses is the language barrier. Sometimes I did not understand what the teacher wanted and this made it more difficult for me. Another big problem that had was that my grammar was not good at all; I made mistake every time I wrote a paper. My problem in grammar was mainly verbs, commas and organization. I remember very well that many times I confused â€Å"were† with â€Å"where† on my writing. Other times, I did not know where to put commas since the rules from English grammar are different from the Spanish ones. This was a hard start for me because I had to do more than of what I expected to do for a class seeing as language and grammar we re making problems in my writing. I order for me to get better I had to ask for help because I could not do this without someone’s help. I ask the teacher to help me and she was very nice in giving me a hand, but I knew that I had to do more than that in order to pass the class with a good grade. I also used some help from other people like my friend Patricia who went through the papers with me so that I could notice my errors. Every time I did this, I improved my writing little by little. I got better at it, every time I wrote something, I got better ideas of how to organize my papers in this class and in other classes. With all this work I got very good, but I have to say that it took a lot of time in order to organize end do this kind of work right. In the end, I got to get better on writing my papers because I dedicated more time to this kind of work and because, in time, I got to understand the grammar better.

The Canyon - GMC’s Ultimate Compact Truck The Canyon is GMC’s ultimate compact truck. The truck itself comes in three different types: regular cab, crew cab, and king cab. One particular canyon, for example, is a regular cab pick-up. It can be any color the potential buyer desires. Dark red is the most common color, and a light gray interior usually comes included in the package. Its sleek design provides for minimal wind resistance, and there is a lot of space in the cab. It has a liner installed in the bed, decent rims, and standard hub- caps. There is a little Jesus fish that has been glued on to the tail- gate for decoration. The cab has a newly installed radio/CD player and the standard speakers are decent. The side mirrors are large and it really helps increase the drivers’ visibility, when driving. The tires, however, are sub-standard, but apart from that this truck is a grade A machine. Impressions and messages that people get from objects tell them many things about what its there for, why is it like that, what are the owners tastes, and so on and so forth. This particular canyon (that one mentioned earlier) is a dark red color. This color exudes confidence, endurance, friendliness, and intelligence. The attitude, that the color impresses upon people is a lay back and take it easy attitude. There is a saying that goes along the lines of â€Å"The covering reflects on what is within†. The global economic downturn has impacted jobs outsourcing in the BPO industry as it has helped to be one of the largest job creators in India. Due to this, many companies had to increase their operations output and therefore employ more and more people to keep up with the expanding trend. One of the major impacts, being growth and maturity, had an effect on the BPO industry and contributed to the outsourcing companies and continued growth of the industry. The IT and BPO outsourcing boom created a huge impact in the Indian economy and it increased the IT salary, cost of living, real-estate price and eventually it increased the outsource cost for many companies. Job outsourcing seemed to be the only viable option as global economic downturn had created many problems when it came to funding and financial institutions. There needed to be cut backs in order to keep things afloat and most companies would see that job outsourcing would solve at least one of the many problems involved in the economic downturn. Not only does it mean that it will save companies in the US and UK money, by offloading jobs abroad for cheap labor, it also means that it’s giving countries like India and Philippines the opportunity that is needed to secure a faster growing economy and generating much needed jobs. The global economic downturn provided merges and many acquisitions for the BPO industry and helped to create certain flexibilities for some companies which helped with resource management. The main reason why the economic downturn has impacted on job outsourcing in a major way is because it is cost effective and helps companies concentrate on core areas. The question asks whether the behaviourist, the psychoanalytic, the cognitive, or the neuroscientific perspective is most intellectually significant and most prominent in psychology today (Robins, Goling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). II. Introduction The introduction presents differing contentions regarding which school of psychology is most prominent. Five references have been cited in the introduction. It is believed by some that the cognitive perspective reigns over psychoanalysis and behaviourism (Baars, 1986; Gardner, 1985; Hunt, 1993; Sperry, 1988, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). An opposing conviction, however, states that this belief is merely a representation of cognitive psychologists’ opinion of their own field rather than an accurate statement based on facts (Friman, Allen, Kerwin, & Larzelere, 1993, p. 662, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). Furthermore, it is argued that the belief in a â€Å"cognitive perspective revolution† is simply a method for scientists to justify their practice (Leahey, 1991, p.362, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). Other theories have indicated, without empirical evidence however, that behaviourism continues to flourish despite the loss of â€Å"mentor B.F Skinner† (Salzinger, 1994, p. 816; p. 461, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). Lastly, it is contented by some that the neuroscientific perspective continues to prosper (Churchland, 1998, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117), and that the entire field of psychology will eventually become a subfield of neuroscience (Bechtel, 1988, as cited in Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 117). III.Methods The authors employed three indexes to conduct their study; the subject-matter index of psychology’s Flagship publications, the subject-matter index of psychology dissertations and the citation index of Flagship publications. For the psychology’s Flagship publications, authors selected several word stems in a database called psychINFO, including: psychoanal#, cognit#, neurosci#, reinforce#, and conditioning#. At that time, they calculated the percentage of articles published in the Flagship publications between 1950 to 1997 and charted their findings over time (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 118). For the psychology dissertations, authors once again employed psychINFO, this time, to analyze the topics presented in doctoral dissertations between 1967 to 1994. Then, they calculated the percentage of dissertations for each of the four psychological perspectives (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 119). Finally, for the citation index of Flagship publications, authors su rveyed trends regarding the number of citations found concerning each perspective in the Flagship publications. Then, they selected the top four journals in each perspective using a rating system operated by prominent neuroscientists (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 119). Applying these findings, authors calculated the â€Å"total number of times per year the flagship publications cited articles published in each sub-disciplinary journal† (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p. 119). IV. Results The results undoubtedly provided answers to the question/hypothesis. The findings indicated that articles regarding the cognitive perspective appeared most frequently in all three indexes, followed by the behavioural perspective. Articles regarding the psychoanalytic and neuroscientific perspective, however, were essentially non-existent throughout the studied period. Authors provided graphs and tables in order to demonstrate their findings over time for each index (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.121-126). V.Discussion/Conclusions Due to their compelling findings, the authors were able to construct several conclusions. Firstly, psychoanalytic journals, dissertations, and flagship articles have not been in the spotlight of mainstream psychology for the past several decades (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.123, 124). Secondly, with the focus currently on cognitive psychology, behavioural psychology has and continues to subside in scientific psychology (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.124). Moreover, the authors’ state that one reason cognitive psychology is transcending behavioural psychology is due to the immeasurable role of computers in modern society. For example, thanks to computers, considerable changes have taken place in regards to scientists’ understanding of memory, information processing, etc (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.124). Lastly, mainstream psychology does not yet recognize neuropsychology; however, there is an obvious increase in popularity that is underway. Authors recom mend further research to explore the growing prominence of neuropsychology (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.125). VI.References Authors used a clear and consistent citation format, and each of the references was properly cited within the article. The authors used a variety of sources ranging from the 1930’s to the year prior to the study. The older references were used to demonstrate variations of theories over time. VII.Personal Reaction I consider this article to be rather thought-provoking. From the beginning, I agreed with the theorists who believed that cognitive psychology was the leading school of psychology. Although this article was written fourteen years ago, I believe it continues to be true today. I was not aware of the serious decline of the behavioural perspective; however, after reading about the impact computers have had on science and scientists, it became clear (Robins, Gosling, & Craik, 1999, p.124). One limitation that I feel could have affected the results was the manner in which they selected the top four journals. I wonder if the results would have varied had different journals been chosen. In my opinion, the sample size of four journals seems somewhat confining to the research. Even so, this was a very interesting article. I would be rather intrigued to read a current study of the same topic and see if the results are equivalent.
